When free is the right answer
If you can stand in front of a white wall and a friend can hold a phone, online renewal costs nothing. Photos taken on a phone are fine; they often save as HEIC or JPEG, and the file must be 54 KB to 10 MB. Read the rules in our requirements guide and test the result in the upload tool.
When paying for a store photo makes sense
A store employee shoots you against a real screen. That avoids edited-background risk. If you need a photo today and a paper print too, Walmart at $7.64 is the cheapest store price we found.
Where Framefare is the better deal
You already have a decent phone photo, or you want a print sheet without a store trip. $2.49 is for the sizing, checks and print sheet. photobooth.online is $0.46 more on the price we saw, with a similar product. The State Department can still reject any photo, ours included.
Framefare can replace a non-white background, but the State Department prefers original photos, so a real white wall or sheet is the safer route.
