What happens when a photo is rejected

For an online renewal, the upload tool checks basic requirements. If it finds a problem it says what to change and you can try another photo. After you submit, an employee reviews the photo. If there is an issue, the State Department sends a letter or email asking for a new photo.

Your application is on hold until a good photo arrives, so retake it once and carefully.

Using Framefare to retake

Upload the new shot for a free preview. Basic checks flag glasses, a hat, blur and a turned face, and it crops to the right size. It cannot promise acceptance; staff decide. $2.49 buys the files and the refund promise covers the first 30 days.

Framefare can replace a non-white background, but the State Department prefers original photos, so a real white wall or sheet is the safer route.

Common questions

How long does a rejected passport photo take to fix?

The State Department sends a letter or email asking for a new photo and holds the application until it arrives. It does not publish a fixed delay, so send a good photo quickly.

Why was my photo rejected when it looked fine?

Shadows, small tilts, a slightly open mouth, edited-looking edges and printer dots are easy to miss on a phone screen. Zoom in and compare against the list above.

Can I fix a rejected photo with an app?

Not if the app changes how you look. The State Department says not to use computer software, phone apps, filters or AI to change a photo. Retake it.

Will a new photo be accepted?

Not guaranteed. The State Department makes the final decision on every photo.
